孔子께서 말씀하시되,
책만 읽었지 나름대로 생각이 없는 사람은 어수선하고, 온갖 생각을 하면서도 책을 보지 않은 사람은 위험하다.

한국의 역사학이 침체되는 가장 중요한 요인 중의 하나가 바로 '자료 혼자 보기'라는 것이 나의 평소의 소신이다. 귀중한 자료를 자기 혼자 들여다 보다가 심심하면 불쑥 한 마디씩, 자기만이 아는 얘기를 함으로써 독보적(?)인 주장을 내세우고 싶은 세속적인 욕심을 이해하지 못하는 바는 아니지만, 우리 나라 사학계는 그 정도가 지나치지 않나 하는 생각이 들 때가 많았다. 역사학계의 자료는 널리 공람되어 많은 의견을 도출해야 할 공물이지 결코 누구의 사적 소유로 은닉되어서는 안 된다. 자료를 혼자 보는 이 시대의 풍토가 싫어서 나는 이 자료들을 공개한다.
여기에 공개하는 자료는 내가 Georgetown University와 National Archives에서 공부할 때 주로 모은 자료와 국내에서 미간된 자료로서 저작권에 분쟁이 생길 우려가 있는 단행본을 제외한, 고전적인 논문과 관문서 등의 1차 사료들이다. 자료의 범위는 한국 현대사, 특히 한국의 분단과 한국전쟁을 다룬 것들이다.
이들을 진작 공개하지 못한 것은 욕심 때문이 아니라 본시 게으른 사람이 이들을 정리하기에 어려움이 많았고, 저작권 분쟁의 여부를 고민했기 때문이었다. 세월이 좋아져서 이제는 복사하기가 많이 편해졌지만 내가 그곳에서 공부할 때만 해도 매 쪽마다 25센트 짜리 동전을 넣고 복사한 것이어서 애정도 남다르고 이제 학계에 공개하려니 감회도 깊다. 아무쪼록 이 자료가 동학, 후학들의 수고로움을 덜어 주고 좋은 논문을 쓰는 데 도움이 되었으면 더 바랄 것이 없다.
