19세기 초 이탈리아의 오페라부파에서 오페라세리아로의 전환점에 위치하는 작곡가로 그의 오페라는 오페라부파에서 오페라세리아의 걸작에 이르기까지 폭넓은 내용을 지니고 있다. 초기의 작품을 빼면 유창하고 아름다운 선율과 적절한 극적 효과를 지녔고 이는 빈약한 관현악법과 대본의 평범함을 보완해준다.
